Nashville Public Library launches ‘Freedom to Learn’ campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It is a topic that's taken hold in Tennessee: books like "Maus" or "Walk Two Moons" have been pulled from cabinets.

Whereas these books is likely to be banned from some faculties, there may be still some place else you can find them.

"Our job is just to ensure that if you'd like it, it is right here for you," stated Public Information Officer for the Nashville Public Library, Ed Brown.

"'Maus' is all checked out proper now," said Brown. "So we got extra copies on order but as quickly as word got around about what happened in McMinn County, we got a whole lot of holds."

Those are simply a number of the two million other materials on the Nashville Public Library.

"A lot of people do not wish to read these books; they do not need their kids to have to learn these books, or forced to read these books, and that is tremendous," said Brown. "But there are quite a bit people who do, and we wish to be there for the people who do wish to learn these supplies."

And if you wish to make your love for these materials recognized, what higher manner than with your library card? The 5,000 limited version cards for the marketing campaign say "I read banned books."

"All of us watch the TV shows that we like; all of us watch the completely different sports activities or root for the different teams we're a part of," said Brown. "Books are no completely different."

The goal is to get the 5,000 library cards in the fingers of latest sign-ups this month.

"We aren't making an attempt to be a push again — a force pushing back towards these choices — we need to be an alternative choice to say, in case you might not be able to get it there... you can get it here," stated Brown.

The limited version library playing cards can be found as long as supplies last.
