Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech giant mentioned its iconic music player has been changed by different gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said: "At this time, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an unimaginable music experience throughout all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with support for spatial audio - there is not any better option to get pleasure from, uncover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the primary MP3 player that could maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new class of digital music player that permits you to put your entire music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same once more."

Related MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has launched five versions of its music player - the Traditional, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent years, with mobile phone know-how enabling prospects to hearken to music services on their telephones.
